Everyone loves a hassle-free travel experience, yet often reality falls short when the airline doesn’t deliver. The Vacationer conducted a survey with over 1,000 Americans to find out which of the top 10 U.S. airlines they steer clear of. 

For those chasing a smooth journey, they may want to skip these 10 unreliable airlines.

Spirit Airlines

Spirit Airlines is at the top of the list with 21.06% of respondents avoiding it. This could be due to its consistently low passenger satisfaction scores, as seen in its last-place ranking in the 2023 American Customer Satisfaction Index.

Allegiant Air

Allegiant Air follows with 16.36%, potentially because of similar issues related to customer service and flight reliability.

American Airlines 

American Airlines is avoided by 14.40% of those surveyed, which might reflect concerns over its service levels or operational reliability.

Frontier Airlines

Frontier Airlines, closely trailing, is avoided by 14.30% of respondents, possibly due to its budget airline model that may not appeal to all travelers.

Delta Air Lines and JetBlue

Delta Air Lines and JetBlue both share an avoidance rate of 12.63%, indicating that even well-regarded airlines can face challenges in pleasing all segments of travelers.

Alaska Airlines

Alaska Airlines has a slightly lower avoidance rate at 10.68%, suggesting a generally positive perception among the public.

Southwest Airlines

Southwest Airlines, despite its operational meltdown in December, is avoided by only 10.28% of respondents, possibly due to its customer-friendly policies such as two free checked bags and no change fees for some tickets.

United Airlines

United Airlines is further down the list with 7.64%, indicating a more favorable view among the surveyed group.

Hawaiian Airlines

Hawaiian Airlines has the lowest avoidance rate at 5.48%, which could be due to its niche market and unique service offerings.

What Really Matters? 

Interestingly, nearly half of the survey participants revealed they don’t specifically blacklist any airline; instead, their choices hinge on factors such as ticket prices and flight schedules. 

The Bigger Picture

This response emphasizes the complex dynamics of air travel consumer behavior, where the appeal of lower prices and convenient scheduling often overshadows loyalty to any particular brand or negative experiences. 

Low Fares, Lower Satisfaction?

The survey also underscores how pivotal good customer service and clear communication are to airline selection. Airlines such as Spirit, known for their budget-friendly fares, still find it challenging to attract a broad customer base due to lower satisfaction ratings.

On the flip side, Southwest Airlines manages to retain its charm by quickly addressing operational snafus and prioritizing passenger needs, highlighting the significance of adept crisis management and customer care in the aviation sector.
