4 Ways You Might Be Seriously Damaging Your Skin

Overexposure to the sun is just one of many ways you can damage your skin, but there are plenty more ways to do so. Luckily, this can be prevented and your skin can stay protected, but first, you must know what might actually be damaging your skin in the first place.

 

Too Much Sun

 

While a beautiful sunny day can be bright and refreshing, there really can be too much of a good thing. Many people make the common mistake of spending too much time in the sun without sunscreen of the merit that it is annoying to apply, makes you sticky and has a strong smell about it. 

 

However, the alternative means harming your skin. You can get sunburnt pretty easily if you have a lighter skin tone, which can cause redness, pain, peeling, and potentially even skin cancer. Do yourself a favor and wear sunscreen.

 

Tanning

 

Maybe you think you’ll just avoid the sun by using tanning beds, or perhaps you don’t burn easily and want to sit out in the sun for hours to get your skin golden. Unfortunately, using tanning beds isn’t much better for you than the sun and can still cause sunburns as well as cancer. Plus, just because you are more resistant to the sun doesn’t mean you are immune, and you can still get a decent tan by using sunscreen. 

 

Not only that, but too much tanning can cause your skin to become leathery over time, which may be enough to turn many off to tanning altogether unless using sunscreen.

 

Dehydration

 

It’s important to stay hydrated for a number of reasons, but your skin is among those that are benefited. Keeping fresh water in your system will keep your skin glowing and healthy, and can even prevent it from getting as dry. You may even be able to notice wrinkles more easily. So be sure to drink plenty of water and avoid sugary drinks to keep your skin hydrated throughout the day.

 

Smoking

 

Smoking is one of the worst things you can do to your skin. On top of cancer, fried vocal cords, and smelling like a chimney, the toxins in cigarettes can damage the collagen and elastin in your skin. This can make your skin tough, dry, and lead to premature aging. You may also feel less flexible as the elasticity in your skin begins to diminish.
