Recent financial upheavals have made it more important than ever for people to review their financial position and examine their spending. Fortunately, many people will be able to weather the storm and still be able to buy the things that they need. These individuals know that the key to being able to afford anything you need, or want, is proper planning. By following some simple steps, you can ensure that you have the money you need when you want to use it.

Step 1 – Determine How Much Money You Need

The first step in determining how much you should be saving is to determine how much money you will need to buy the things that you want. This is easy for most purchases because they have a fixed price, but for things that fluctuate in price, a ballpark estimate will do. If you are unsure of how much something costs, do a quick search online to see the average prices of the things you are interested in.

Step 2 – Establish A Saving Time Frame

Once you have determined how much you need to save, you need to figure out how much time you have to save up that amount. There are two routes to go with this: save up larger amounts of money in a shorter amount of time or save up lower amounts of money over a longer amount of time. If it is a purchase that can be made at your leisure, the longer time frame will leave you with more disposable income at the moment. However, if it is a purchase that needs to be made as soon as you can, save as much as you can as quickly as you can so you can make the purchase and move on to other things.

Step 3 – Make Your Savings Automatic

Automating your savings allows you to save the right amount each month without having to think about it. Many banks now allow you to move a certain amount of money from your checking account to your savings account each month or deposit your paycheck into multiple accounts to make saving for the future simple. Just specify how much you want to go into your savings account each month or pay period and the service will do the rest for you.

Step 4 – Make Your Purchase When You Reach Your Goal

Once you have made the regular deposits into your savings account for the required amount of time, you will have the money available to afford whatever you need to purchase. It could be a new television, a new outfit, a new car to drive…anything. When the time comes, the money will be there and you will not have to stress about how you will be able to afford the purchase.

Following the above steps will help ensure that you can afford anything you need when the time comes to purchase it. Even if you have to make your purchase a bit ahead of schedule, you will be in a better financial position to purchase if you had to pay the whole amount out of pocket all at once.
