A couple of weeks ago, Sleep Number was kind enough to give me a p5 bed to review. Apparently, they know I’m a troubled sleeper? While there are plenty of Sleep Number bed reviews out there, not many will give you an honest opinion on the P5 bed itself.
My Sleep Number Review
I was excited to review the Sleep Number p5 Bed and to upgrade to a fabulous king which we had been saving to buy when we buy our first house in a couple of months. Like many people, I’ve always seen Sleep Number beds on commercials and been curious about them.
Here’s exactly what the p5 model features:
• Exclusive SLEEP NUMBER® DualAir technology lets you quietly adjust firmness on each side of the mattress with a quiet wireless remote, so you both enjoy ideal comfort
• 11-inch Pillowtop with breathable fabric and moisture-wicking fill to help you sleep comfortably
• 2-inch exclusive comfort layer naturally supports your body’s curves
Putting the Sleep Number P5 in Your Home
As you can see, the Sleep Number bed looks like any other bed. You won’t need any special sheets or other bedding accessories for your Sleep Number bed.
From the pictures, you can see that we do not have a headboard or a bed frame (we’re also saving that purchase for our house where we’ll have more room). Our old bed sat on a platform frame and was too small, so Sleep Number sent over sturdy legs and a temporary frame until we decide to buy an actual king bed frame.
Here you can see a better angle of the legs. They really do the job well! They seem very sturdy! I did a couple bounce tests and they didn’t move an inch. Solid. 🙂
(Please excuse our old bed frame that we have hidden under this bed. 🙂 )
Finding Your Sleep Number Setting
We’ve also been playing with our personal Sleep Number settings. It’s pretty exciting to be able to change the firmness in your bed with just a click of the button!
I will admit that I was worried about the supposed “hump” in the middle of the bed. However, it hasn’t been a problem for us at all.
After playing around with different numbers for a couple nights, we both ended up on the same Sleep Number. But even when we tried out pretty different numbers, we didn’t have a problem with the supposed “hump”. As someone who sleeps sideways, diagonal, upside down, etc., this is great news!
Another thing that concerned me was moving the bed. Since we’re planning to move within the next 6 months or so, I was worrying about the horrible process of dis-assembling the bed. I talked to the set-up crew about this and they said that once the bed is put together (as it is now), we can just move it like a regular mattress! That is really great news. I’m sure there is more information on the Sleep Number site that can walk me through a move, but it’s nice knowing that we won’t have to take the whole thing apart.
It looks like we will have to remove the connecting air tubes, but that looks pretty simple. Pardon my horrible photography skills, but you can see the tubes just behind the mattress (they connect to the air machine which is small and sits below the bed):
So, Is It More Comfortable Than a Regular Bed?
Well, I’m sure it’s just as comfortable as any top-of-the-line mattress, but it’s definitely much more comfortable than the mattress we were sleeping on before. One morning, a couple days after we received the mattress, I was lying in bed and thought, “okay, this mattress is really comfortable.”
It probably helps that we found our perfect sleep number (which wasn’t too hard; you can even take a little quiz on their website and it was pretty accurate – only 5 points off from my personal sleep number.)
My husband seems happy with it, too. He’s not too picky, but he does love the Sleep Number mattress. Luckily, we’re a couple that prefers a similar type of firmness in our bed, but if you’re a couple that likes different bed-types (or have large differences in size and weight), then a Sleep Number would probably suit your preferences much better.

P.S. I ordered those pink pillow covers off of Etsy and I LOVE them! Purchasing just pillow covers is much cheaper than buying brand-new pillow and I was able to stuff my old pillows inside of them (no need for pillow inserts). The designer that I ordered them from was super friendly and I received them in about a week and a half!
Everything else on the bed is from Bed, Bath, and Beyond (we have a treasure trove of gift cards from our wedding). I made the picture above the bed myself. I’ll post a tutorial soon!
What are your thoughts on Sleep Number beds? Do you have any questions about the bed?
I have always heard about these beds, but don’t know anyone who owns one (at least, I don’t think so), so this was interesting to read. I like a softer bed and I know my boyfriend likes a more firm bed. I think a sleep number bed would be a good option to consider in the future!
I do love using this bed!
